While trolling for blog fodder amongst my hits as recorded on Sitemeter I came across this,
Wood backboards? In the 21st Century? Really? I didn't know that you could even buy wood backboards, but a couple of vendors still carry them, although I can't imagine why.
It's been at least a dozen years since we stopped using them. First, they are incredibly heavy compared to the lightweight synthetics available today. Second, even if varnished and sealed, they absorb yucky bodily fluids. They do that because they tend to splinter and crack at the edges. Which of course is another risk. Just imagine driving a splinter with yucky bodily fluids, someone elses yucky bodily fluids right through your nitrile gloves and into your delicate hands. Ugh. Did I mention that they're heavy? Oh yeah. And impossible to decon to acceptable standards.
I'm not sure why you want to make wooden backboards Roclin, CA but you're really better off with modern synthetics.
Just trying to help is all.

A lot of pools (and hence, life gaurds) use wood backboards.
My guess is that's because they have them and they don't get used too often. Plastic boards float very well and are sealed so they won't get waterlogged.
We still have a few. If I know that we'll be flying the patient to some obscure hospital (ie, all of our hospital's are on neuro diversion, so they have to be flown to say, Dallas) I'll put the patient on them...because we'll never see them again.
